“Since its move from the outskirts of Shrewsbury to Condover just over 40 years ago, Shrewsbury Golf Club has blossomed into one of the most prestigious clubs in Shropshire and Herefordshire. It is nominally recognised as the “headquarters” of the County Union, which cherishes the opportunity to stage major amateur championships over what has developed into a very challenging golf course. The club has hosted, on a regular basis, the county boys, youths, amateur and open championships and most seasons is high on the list of the county captain when considering venues for Midland League matches. It was also chosen by the Midland Golf Union to host the Midland Mid-Amateur Championship in 2010 and in 2013 is playing an important part in the centenary celebrations of the County Union by kindly making its course available for two competitions embracing all clubs in Shropshire and Herefordshire – the Centenary Texas Scramble and the annual Cognac Trophy.”
Bob Davies, Shropshire & Herefordshire President 2013
“We always enjoy our annual match between the Church in Wales and Church of England clergy. The course, always in good condition, is a good challenge for players of varying ability. The food is excellent. The staff are very hospitable, friendly and helpful, always ready to go the extra mile. That we have been returning for 25 years tells its own story. ”
The Most Reverend Barry Morgan, Archbishop of Wales 2013
A recent charity golf day at Shrewsbury supported the work of Severndale Academy in meeting the needs of students with disabilities from all over the county. On one of the warmest days of the year, 45 teams of 4 enjoyed playing golf in the wonderful surroundings of our superbly presented course.
The students of Severndale played in a junior competition over six holes which had been specially prepared by our greens staff on the practice ground. The students used the golf skills they had learned during their after school golf sessions and produced some great shots whilst enjoying their game. Later they were presented with trophies by the major sponsors for the day and enjoyed a barbecue before returning to school.
The winning Longmynd Insurance team were presented with their prizes by the head teacher of the school who thanked all the entrants, club and school staff for contributing to a well organised and successful golf day.
The annual Summer Ball took place on Saturday 21st June in the spectacular setting of the club marquee. The Ladies Committee and the catering staff had decorated the marquee in a 1920's theme which was echoed in the dining room and lounge bar. The members and guests entered into the spirit of the 1920's by dressing in period costume and sipping cocktails. They enjoyed a gourmet buffet in a party atmosphere in the marquee where live music was provided by the excellent Vertigo Band.
Thanks must be extended to all the organisers, staff and members and guests for making the Ball a truly memorable occasion.
Tickets are now on sale from behind the bar for the presentation, hog roast and disco. The festivities start at 7.30. Tickets priced at £7.50 each - all members and guests are welcome.
Over the last few weeks there has been little demand for Sunday lunches at the Club. After careful consideration it has been concluded that lunches will not be available on Sundays until October at which time they will be reintroduced.
We have some NEW STOCK in the shop which has resulted in a lot of interest from the members. The new D.N.A .shoe from FootJoy has been receiving a lot of attention. Please call into the shop to take a look at this, and the rest of our new stock.
